ETH Zurich Showcases IMX500 Project for Wearables and Drones at “Student Meets Lab 2024”
On December 4, 2023, ETH Zurich hosted the much-anticipated “Student Meets Lab” event at the ETZ foyer, drawing an impressive 400+ students from the D-ITET department. Organized by the AMIV Student Association and D-ITET, this event connects students with the department's diverse research labs, allowing them to explore opportunities for bachelor’s and master’s theses, semester projects, and group collaborations.
The event aims to demystify the vast field of electrical engineering and information technology, helping students discover areas of specialization that align with their passions and career aspirations. Labs, in turn, use the opportunity to present their projects and connect with young talent to join their teams.
This year, one of the highlights was the presentation of the IMX500 project, led by the research team of Professor Michele Magno at the Center for Project-Based Learning. The project demonstrates the potential of Edge AI for wearables, drones, robotics, and surveillance, using the Sony IMX500 Intelligent Vision Sensor to enable real-time AI processing directly on the edge.
TinyissimoYOLO: Next-Gen Edge AI
The ETH team, including Dr. Tommaso Polonelli, Liam Boyle, and Pietro Bonazzi, is developing TinyissimoYOLO, a lightweight object detection model optimized for low-power devices. Key goals include:
- Running YOLO on an ARM Cortex-M4 platform.
- Creating an open-source library for researchers and students.
- Supporting applications in wearables, robotics, and smart sensors.
With over 400 students attending, the “Student Meets Lab” event reinforces ETH Zurich’s role as a leading force in research and collaboration. Sony Sensing Solution University Collaboration Program (SSUP) is proud to continue its partnership with ETH Zurich. It’s an inspiring step forward as Sony teams up with universities worldwide to support innovation, education, and breakthroughs in next-generation technologies.
